The term, coined in the wake of disability studies, first appeared within the British activist milieu in the 1980s under the name ableism. While it was first defined in the American feminist journal Off Our Backs in an “Open Letter to Disabled Lesbians”, it was introduced in France in 2004 by the queer disabled activist Zig Blanquer.
