Ecology is simultaneously a science, a school of thought, and a set of values and proposals. Engineer and philosopher Malcom Ferdinand distinguishes ecology from environmentalism, “the set of movements and currents of thought that attempt to overturn the environmental divide without calling social injustices, gender discrimination and political dominance into question”. This approach perpetuates the ecofeminism developed by Vandana Shiva and Maria Mies, who oppose the idea of “nature protection”, a dead end as long as it does not challenge the capitalist, colonial and patriarchal system.
