Originally referring to the exploitation of resources in the Amazon rainforest, extractivism has been broadened to name a model of global economic development that transforms land into “natural capital”. For anthropologist Arturo Escobar, the extractivist escalation is entrenched in a violence perpetrated against women and the global South. It “implies racialized practices of plunder; the worlds being destroyed are nonwhite (Black and Indigenous)”.
