Fouad Bouchoucha

Landscape
From 02/07/2014 to 02/08/2014

Palais de Tokyo invited by Trouw invites… – the program proposed by Stedelijk Museum and De Verdieping – presents an exhibition of the artist Fouad Bouchoucha in the basement of the TrouwAmsterdam.

Fouad Bouchoucha (b.1981, Marseille, France) is an artist who defies the limits of territories to reveal their unsuspected potential. The artworks are considered as tools, accelerators, activators that allow to exceed, overflow, cross material barriers and reach sublimated instants. This quest of overtaking perceptible frontiers is led thanks to an unlimited set of tools, may they be technical, psychological, acoustic or geographical.

Landscape (2014) is an immersive monumental installation that invites the public to penetrate an unusual and mysterious environment. The viewer is facing a constant and dense landscape of fog that forbids any visibility. The disorientation is only cleared by a sound emitting from this blurry space. It activates sensations, stimulates the imaginary, and draws the morphology of an unvisible panorama. Here sound functions like a sonar, a radar that sharpens a mental travel.

Fouad Bouchoucha, inspired by the unachieved novel by René Daumal, Le Mont Analogue (1944), is thus using the imagination of each individual stepping in the installation. Each mind explores the space through recollections of its own history projected on this secret and enigmatic territory. Landscape is a work that operates as a time catalyst. It convokes the past through the echoes of the sound in each participant’s memory. The present is magnified thanks to the imagination that builds brief understandings. The future, finally, manifests itself through the chimera, fantasies and other dreams that draw a furtive, ephemeral and transitory landscape.

This time, three other institutes take their turns filling the basement of TrouwAmsterdam: Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Beirut (Caïro) and New-Museum (New-York). Each of the three institutes are inviting an artist to depict the themes of “transience” and “impermanence.” Trouw Invites… will take place from July 3 to November 30, 2014, and each exhibition can be viewed for one month.
