Exchange is the act of giving one thing and receiving another. It can also refer to a discussion. Exchange is both the consequence of human encounters and the condition of any society. It can meet material needs, or be the symbolic expression of sociability. In Bili Bidjocka’s work, spectators are invited to enter, leave and cross paths in a space representing a table, a place of meeting and discussion. In Ibrahim Mahama’s work, the exchange is more symbolic and takes place on a larger scale. His work focuses on the architectural traces of the colonial presence in Africa, and the investment of these places by local populations. Finally, in Jonathas de Andrade’s work, exchange forms the literal foundation, as the t-shirts and shirts that make up his installation were exchanged between their former owners and the artist himself.
