Sonia Gomes was born in 1948 in Caetanópolis (Brazil), she lives and works in São Paulo. After a career in law, she turned to art in her forties. She has exhibited extensively around the world, notably in major biennials, and has established herself as a significant figure in contemporary art. She is represented by the galleries Mendes Wood DM and Pace.
