Ashley Hans Scheirl developed a performative and experimental film practice in the late 1970s, which was widely disseminated in alternative queer and lesbian circles internationally. Since the 1990s, they have devoted themselves mainly to painting, staged performatively as part of installations that respond to the spatial and conceptual context of each exhibition. They were professor of contextual painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 2006 to 2022.
