Caring for country, literally meaning to fulfill its responsibilities vis-à-vis a territory, more specifically refers to the importance that Australian Aboriginal peoples place on customary land and water management. Beyond material organization, it involves “looking after all the values, places, resources, stories and cultural obligations associated with that area, as well as associated processes of spiritual renewal, connecting with ancestors, food provision, and maintaining kin relations” (Jon Altman, Geoff Buchanan and Libby Larsen). To Aboriginal peoples, the term country does not only designate a place. It encompasses all living things, the culture and communities connected to the land.
