Screening of “Dreams have no title” (2022) by Zineb Sedira & “Les Mains libres” (1964-65) by Ennio Lorenzini followed by a discussion

This screening brings together the films Dreams have no title by Zineb Sedira and Les Mains libres by Ennio Lorenzini, which Zineb Sedira discovered while researching for her own film, awarded a special mention when it was presented in the French Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022.

The first international Algerian production made in the wake of independence, Les Mains Libres is a political and militant testimony to the lingering traces of colonization. Recently restored by the Cineteca di Bologna, it offers a particular resonance with the personal history of Zineb Sedira, whose film Dreams have no title bears witness to intellectual and artistic solidarity of the 60s, looking at both collective and individual history to take a broader approach to anti-colonialism, notions of identity, memory, resistance and of acceptance of the other. In this film, which incorporates footage from post-independence Algeria, Zineb Sedira uses a variety of strategies to weave the history of cinema into her own fiction-reality. In it, she recounts the story of her life, her family and her community, in a narrative that enriches current debates on migration and solidarity, vulnerability and social exclusion. In Dreams Have No Titles, the artist addresses a major turning point in the history of cultural, intellectual and avant-garde production in the 1960s, 1970s and beyond, particularly in France, Italy and Algeria. It focuses on a corpus of co-productions and film productions, particularly of a militant nature, which had an impact on post-colonial movements. Her approach also serves as a warning about the failure of a promise of freedom that, for many people, remains an unfulfilled, even unattainable dream.

Alongside Yoann Gourmel, Zineb Sedira offers a discussion on these works and the connections between them following the screenings.

The films are shown in French without subtitles. The discussion is in French.

Tickets for this event will give access to all the exhibitions of the Palais. This screening/discussion will take place in the Salle 37.
