Theorist Claudia Reiche and artist Ashley Hans Scheirl discuss the filmic practice of the latter, who made around fifty experimental films between 1979 and 1998, in Super 8 or 16mm. Combining gothic and science fiction, absurdist humour and empowerment, inspired by Viennese Actionism and Z-series aesthetics, these unusual films can be considered cult works.
The discussion will focus on two of the artist’s feature-length films:
Somewhere between gore and cyberpunk, Dandy Dust (1998) features Dust, a transgender cyborg who travels through time and space in search of their memories.
Flaming Ears (1991) is a lesbian sci-fi movie set in the imaginary town of Asche (Ash) in the year 2070. A story of love and revenge, sex and violence, it is an anti-romantic plea for love in all its forms.
Following the discussion, Dandy Dust will be screened – in English with French subtitles.
This film contains some explicit or violent scenes that may offend some sensibilities and is not recommended for young audiences.
Tickets for this event will give access to all the exhibitions of the Palais. This talk will take place in the Salle 37.
