A person is emancipated if he or she can decide for him or herself. The term refers to the individual but also to the group, as emancipation can be collective. In his paintings, Maxwell Alexandre explores the idea that the self-determination of Black people can only be achieved by taking part in an art market that seeks to exclude them, in an attempt to occupy an environment that remains eternally closed to racialised communities. Kudzanai Chiurai, exhibiting his collection of leaflets and records, revives calls for independence and the end of all colonial powers, masked or not.
