Isabelle Merle

Isabelle Merle is research director at the CNRS, colonisation historian and specialist in Pacific history.

She took an interest in the first contacts between islanders and Europeans and participated in the reissue of travel stories including that of Heinrich Zimmermann republished in 2019 under the title Le dernier voyage de Cook (Anacharsis, Toulouse) and of Watkin Tench, reissued in 2020 as Botany Bay. La fondation de l’Australie coloniale (Anacharsis, Toulouse, 1st edition, 2006). She is also a specialist in the colonial history of New Caledonia, author of Expériences coloniales. La Nouvelle-Calédonie, 1853-1920 (Anacharsis, Toulouse, 2020, 1st ed., Belin, Paris, 1995). She published with Adrian Muckle L’indigénat. Genèses dans l’Empire français. Pratiques en Nouvelle-Calédonie (CNRS-Edition, Paris, 2019) and is also the author of several articles dealing with colonial and post-colonial issues.
