Anne Lacaton & Jean Philippe Vassal

Anne Lacaton (b. 1955) & Jean Philippe Vassal (b. 1954) are amongst the most talented architects of their generation, and in 2021 were awarded the prestigious Prtizker Prize for the entirety of their architectural work over previous decades. They promote a non-standardized architecture that is at once economical and generous, open to the freedom of users and the potential transformations that they might bring about. Highly attuned to the value and the soul of place, they often look to conserve and foreground existing architecture in their projects. This was very much the case at the Palais de Tokyo, whose renovation they oversaw in 2001 and 2012, a project for which they were nominated for the Moniteur Prix de l’Équerre d’Argent in 2001. The duo have received numerous national and international awards, including the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2018, in recognition of their sustainable approach to the built environment and their respect for the appropriation of architecture by its users. In 2019, they also received the Mies van der Rohe grant.
