A museum in exile, or solidarity museum, is an intangible museum made up of a collection of works by artists wishing to show their support for a cause linked to political or social events. The idea arose in Chile in the early 1970s. While Salvador Allende’s Popular Front government was under attack from the extreme right, the art critics José María Moreno Galván and Mario Pedrosa decided to set up international support groups by using the donation of artworks. Solidarity museums are conceived so as to circulate in exile and raise awareness about the political issues of a cause, until their return to the country in question.
