    Futurism

Futurism is a literary and artistic movement born with the publication of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti’s Manifesto of Futurism in 1909, making it arguably the first avant-garde of the 20th century. Albert Einstein had just published Special Relativity (1905), a theory that had a profound effect on them: there is no stability, everything is movement. Futurists loved machines, noise, the city, cars and anything that moved fast. They rejected aesthetic tradition and exalted the modern world. Futurism had a great influence on the French avant-garde, including Cubism, but its reputation was tarnished by the collusion of some of its members with fascism and a form of social Darwinism.
