The term Afropean appeared during the 1990s. According to the academic Maboula Soumahoro, it designates a person of colour who has been born or raised in Europe. Afropeanness describes a culture rooted in several cultures, without any duality or dissociation. It also highlights a racialised experience and the visible and invisible connections that result from it. The term was popularised in the late 2000s by the novelist Léonora Miano in her work Afropean soul et autres Nouvelles, 2008, and by the writer Johny Pitts with the launch of the Facebook page Afropean Culture in 2010.
