In 2021, Dorothée Munyaneza encountered the philosopher Elsa Dorlin and her text “Moi, toi, nous…: Tituba ou l’ontologie de la trace,” which drew from Maryse Condé’s genealogical narrative. This narrative brought to life Tituba—a Black woman and witch—from a few lines in the records of the Salem witch trials, at a time when it was not right to be either of those.
Through words, body, voice, and song, Dorothée continues her exploration of a body-archive capable of collecting and honouring memories—a living, sensitive, corporeal archive. This archive brings together experiences born from dispersion to resonate with the breaths, lives, and dreams of those whose identities and existences were denied and crushed by the slave trade and colonial system.
