The work of Diego Tonus is in dialogue with everyday life, revealing or undermining perceived weaknesses, transforming them through the establishment of relationships between fiction and reality, representation and presentation, methods that require a direct response from spectators.
The Spectacle of Disappearing Money is an on-going performance in which the artist shows to an audience how to make a coin disappear, performed until the artist will reach the perfect illusion.
The trick is shot with a camera and projected in real time on a back wall. The illusion in confrontation with the naked eye fails to convince, and yet projected in real-time on the screen above it seems to work perfectly – exposing the gap between mediation and lived experience.
This work deals with how the perception of reality can be easily manipulated, and how the distinction of the dimensions of “truth” and of “fake” are continuously interconnected and mutually influential.
Diego Tonus b. 1984, lives and works in Amsterdam.
