Organised as part of Mel O’Callaghan’s exhibition at Palais de Tokyo, this round table event will bring together academics and practitioners dealing with altered states of consciousness in 20th century anthropological studies and research in ritual and material cultures in Malaysian Borneo. With: Paul Robear and Laura Lee, Directors of the Cuyamungue Institute, Santa Fe, Emmanuel Cohen, performance and theatre academic, The New School Parsons Paris, Constance de Monbrison, Curator, Anthropologist and Head of Southeast Asian Collections, Musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, Sabine Rittner, Psychotherapist at the University Hospital of Heidelberg, Department of Medical Psychology, and author of the 2015 research paper, ‘Ritual Body Postures: Empirical Study of a Neurophysiological Unique Altered State of Consciousness’, Mel O’Callaghan, Artist, and Daria de Beauvais, Curator, Palais de Tokyo.

 

The discussion will be followed by the performance To Hear With My Eyes in the exhibition space conceived by the Artist and realised by Paul Robear and Laura Lee with Sabine Rittner. The performers will be handling various objects symbolising the stages needed to access an “ecstatic trance”, according to the method developed during the 1970s by the Anthropologist and Linguist Dr. Felicitas D. Goodman, the founder of the Cuyamungue Institute.
