A battle is being fought between the blockchain and carbon-based lifeforms, who are in a race to either use up all the energy in the world or save enough of it to survive. Celestial and technical, ecological, and poetic, this work explores the thermodynamics of the proof-of-work blockchain model and social imaginaries invested in the social legitimation of crypto, a form of capital that has an exponential demand for energy.

Crypto attempts to engage with a universal flashpoint of global supply chain crisis, climate crisis, and the energy politics of cryptocurrency and war. Crypto is a performance sketch based on new texts and music composed for Gediminas and Holly’s third album Crypto, to be released in 2023.

Launched in fall 2017, La Manutention is a residency program dedicated to performing artists. Holly Childs & Gediminas Zygus are invited in residence for one month. The artists meet the public once per week in the spaces of the Palais de Tokyo. These performative evenings allow the public to discover their world and those of their guests, while offering the opportunity to follow the evolution of their work.
