The endlessly moving figure of John Travolta in the lotus position (circa 1984) becomes the motif for a customized screensaver, turned into a clock. With Yogic Travolta Screensaver, Anthea Hamilton transforms the functional capabilities of the video work: The screen background, a non-space by definition, is thus transformed into a place of action. The body of the youthful Travolta functions as a sculptural and architectural element, the symmetry of his position conjuring up the ornamentation of a Gothic façade in Venice for the artist, when the regularly altered direction of his gaze indicates the time. This work is capable of existing on any support at the Palais de Tokyo, from a window to a computer screen. Anthea Hamilton, born in 1978 in London, lives and works in London.
