"Numerous complaints have come to the Emperor..."

Have you been ‘refused’ by the art world? Rejected? Negated? Ignored? Has your work been disregarded? Are complaints in order?

Taking its cue from the Emperor Napoleon III himself (24 April 1863) , and so “wishing to let the public judge the legitimacy of these complaints”, Family Business “has decided that the works of art which were refused should be displayed”.

CALL FOR ENTRIES:

In the Family Business small house, at Palais de Tokyo, between April 5 and April 14, 2014, bring you work and a ‘testimony of refusal’ and join the “Salon des refusés et des persistants” or the “Salon des persévérants” (or anyway you decide to call it).

Check www.familybusiness.us.

On Saturday evening, April 5, a music extravaganza will be organized by groups Family Business spotted on the streets of Paris:”Les Refusés Rock!”

NB : Il n’y a jamais de troisième chance de faire une seconde bonne impression! Join us.

Useful Information

Drop off date: Bring your art work and letter of rejection on Saturday, April 5th between 1pm and 7pm at Palais de Tokyo, for Family Business: the Fam Biz house is located right at the entrance of PdT opposite the ticket booth

– Who: Anyone who has been rejected, refused to by an art establishment, institution, museum, gallery, art competition… Now famous artists are not excluded as we all have some skeletons of rejection in our closets

– What: By ‘art work’ we mean anything from a painting to a sculpture to a drawing to a photograph, to a xerox conceptual note, to a hand made rag, to a an installation, to a film or video etc. By anything we mean ‘anything that is not very big’ considering that the Family Business house is really small small and you want to have many fellow rejected artists to join in (imagine being rejected by a show on the rejected 🙁 Won’t be nice)

– How: Please bear in mind that your work will not/cannot be insured or secured given the character of the endeavor and the no-budget reality (alas, Fam Biz has faced its share of refusals too…). In fact, and as is usual in such occasions, please be prepared to sign a document stating the circumstances and also giving us permission to post amazing pictures of the Salon.

– How to: Your work will be exhibited in a “Salon” manner, (that is however and wherever there is space in and on Fam Biz house), democratically and on a “first come first hunged” basis. Make sure to bring your own installation material (e.g. nails, tape, monitor and headphones, etc)

Reclaim: Bring with you a photo of the work so we can identify it as yours when we take the exhibition down and you reclaim your work : Monday, April 21st, btw 1pm and 7pm.

– Proof: The letter of rejection you will provide will be part of the archive Family Business will make to honor the historicity of the event and educate generations to come
