In Lyons, pure color

The first part of "Robert Malaval, kamikaze", which will be featured as part of the Biennale d'Art Contemporain de Lyon, will concentrate on the years 1972 and 1973. This is when light invaded the artist's oeuvre and fresh colors, pastel blues, tender yellows, and clear pinks, are present in all of the paintings.

Robert Malaval, Vol 545, 1972

Flowers, landscapes, playful rural motifs form his sources of inspiration. The brushstrokes are repetitive, the motifs often geometric, and the picture as a whole exudes the pleasure of painting and obvious happiness. A few years earlier the series titled "Rose-Blanc-Mauve" sketched out a truly pop universe peopled with female silhouettes and pink fogs. The body is a constant presence in the series, fragmented, sketched out. The series reflects the circles Malaval was moving in at that very moment, the world of fun and frivolous society life, and it was one of his rare attempts at integrating society. He was no dupe of that world and quickly put an end to the attempt.

The series "Été pourri peinture fraîche and Multicolor", which make up the main thrust of this show, represent the ultimate development of this and announce the artist's subsequent abandoning of the human figure once and for all in his work.

Robert Malaval, Planche de Cent demi-heures de dessin quotidien, 1969

Echoing the general theme of the Biennale d'Art Contemporain de Lyon (the experience of time)
, the 1969 series "Cent demi-heures de dessin quotidien", like an experiment designed to test his never-ending impatience, suggests imposed discipline, work on himself, and a search to make available both the mind and the hand, intended as a way of predisposing the artist to discover new realms. Everyday he methodically filled with tiny dots one of the one hundred small squares drawn on a dozen sheets of paper. The hour, date, and diameter of the pen used fill out the objective information provided. The days without work are represented by the squares left empty by the artist. Malaval was quickly tired of the exercise but persisted to the very end of the three-month experiment, an eternity for Malaval...
